This is the time when we love to look ahead, and get an idea of what we can expect in the coming year. What energetic qualities does 2018 hold? That is mostly decided by the movements of the slower and bigger planets. It is easy to find information about this from the astrological point of view – did you notice that Saturn has passed into Capricorn around the winter/summer Solstice? – here I will look at it in terms of Human Design (while not passing by astrology altogether).
In November 2017 the Moon Nodes moved into Gates that are in the Self Center, which sits in the center of our Chart. It has to do with our direction in life; with being guided and guiding. To realize and to experience a connection with something ‘bigger than us’ makes us feel at home in ourselves, which can give rise to a natural flow of love welling up from inside. It makes us love ourselves and wishing to share this love with the people around us. A responsible articulation of leadership is part of this Center too.
The Moon Nodes highlight what resources we bring to this part of our life, and what remains to be done to let it fully function. This influence continues in the first three months of the new year (Gates 7 and 13 combined: good leaders know how to listen).
In the summer, from May 5 to September 12, Jupiter also stays in the Self Center, in Gate 1: Creativity – Hexagram number 1 in the I Ching. All the six hexagram lines are Yang here: the unadulterated creative principle. Pure and unmotivated creating is at the heart of this energy, which can express in many forms: from ‘l’art pour l’art’ to applied design. The paradox is that something which is beyond boundaries inspires us to bring it into form. Beauty can result, while the ego may have its troubles with allowing the energy to flow.
Form and boundaries are the main theme of 2018, with Uranus most of the year in Gate 3, Beginnings, where the life force must find a way to bring something new into the material realm, and confronts obstacles. You can compare it to giving birth. This position will bring grounding to Uranus, which likes quick change and fast, but not necessarily lasting, implementation (‘Why?’ would a Uranian ask, ‘By the time we would have really established things, the world will have changed again anyway’). I would say that the IT-world, a very Uranian field, works like this pretty much.
We will especially feel the possibility to establish strong foundations for revolutionary ideas from October 22 to February 20 2019, a period in which Uranus and the South Moon Node define Channel 3-60, Mutation. It is possible that change remains ‘stuck’ in this time, until we have cleared old attitudes of fighting with perceived limitations. Letting go of those viewpoints will enable the lightning quality of Uranus to penetrate and transmute material conditions into a new arrangement which will have a chance to grow some roots. We are talking Root Center here, the natural place of the earth in our Chart.
On January 23, Saturn moves into the Root Center: in Gate 58, Joyous Vitality, where it stays until July 26, and returns later in the year. This is one of the Gates which corresponds to the astrological sign of Capricorn, because it covers the same part of the sky, seen from the earth. One could say that the ‘Capricorn Gates’ describe qualities which are present in the skyfield that the star sign Capricorn outlines in its own way. The other Gates – Opposition, Ambition, Inner Truth and Limitation – sound like qualities we usually associate with Capricorn, but Joyous Vitality? I like to see it as a hidden quality of Capricorn people, something for them to explore: a zest for life underlying and vitalizing their sincere and serious approaches. The aliveness of Gate 58 can be found in the outer world as well as inside, and Saturn will most probably probe if we can access our inner joy and live it in the world or if we depend on outside thrills and ongoing stimulation to taste the juice of life. Saturn may provoke some excesses here, both in ‘living it out’ and in repressing life energy, or give easy access to the excitement and joy within us.
The quality of 2018 in one sentence: a movement to bring ideas down to earth, to begin materializing the new directions and insights from the years before. One way to describe Neptune’s position in Gate 63 all year is to say that it helps to adapt the mind to a reorientation of how we relate to the Mystery, which has been happening since some time. In collaborating groups of people, this could manifest as leadership from a place of self-love, and consequently a loving attitude to others. To put new things into practice is not always easy; the challenge will be to stay focused and give ourselves space to enjoy life while ‘on the job’.
Whether you are thinking to start a new work project or want to change your personal circumstances, the time is ripe to begin to make it real. Make sure you do what you really want to do, and put the practical steps in place one after the other, each time checking if you are still in tune with your vision when you face challenges.
