What to watch out for in July:
- Full lunar eclipse on July 27 – see it in the sky and look at how you have embodied and communicated your vision of life in the past weeks. The time between the new moon on the 13th and this full moon is a kind of test drive period for this. It may have been a wild ride – and it is not over yet. Take good care of yourself and stay in tune with your deep knowing what is the right thing to do.
- Mars is retrograde this month: work projects may be delayed, or succeed on the second try. It can also be a good time to evaluate the last few years and set your sights for the two years ahead. Mars will move direct on August 28.
- Mercury is retrograde from July 26 to August 19. Check navigation devices and other electronic gadgets, and watch the antics of your mind: from cosmic understanding to being irritated with everything, especially in authority situations. People may misunderstand what you tell them to do, or you are unwilling to act on their words.
The focus of the last months on leadership continues: the Channel of the Alpha is often activated. Can we stay relaxed when we want to influence and guide people? And can we follow someone else’s guidance? Do we have a common intent? At the same time, the Channel of Logical Mind is very active. Expect more discussions about what is real and fake news, more statements of leaders whose main qualification seems to be that they can loudly and convincingly express their own way of seeing the world to their supporters, while also being ready for people who are fed up with inauthentic leaders and depose them. The planets call us to clarify our minds, be aware of the inspirations of our ‘higher self’ and materialize those in the world as best we can. It’s not sweet or easy, it is quite straightforward and calls for individual responsibility.
Relationships that do not serve some common interest are in the spotlight now. If you are in a relationship that feels limiting or exploitative, have a good look and take appropriate action. Clear communication often is the first step.
To begin with, on July 1, Uranus moves into Gate 27, Nourishment, line 1: take care of your own needs before supporting others. At the same time, until the 4th, Venus activates Channel 63-4, the Logical Mind: forgive yourself and others for ingrained mental patterns involving matters of the heart and let go. Think of unrealistic expectations about love, or of being intolerant of your partner because they tick differently than you do.
With Mercury in the Channel of the Logical Mind (63-4) with Neptune, from half July until August 5, a rational, inquiring mind meets the world of archetypal truths and mystic revelation. Maybe some of these truths find their way into words now, or some people could adopt some esoteric theory which can explain everything. Neptune has been mainly in Gate 63 since April 2016 and will stay there until Jan 2020, so this is a long-lasting collective influence: look at the number of fantasy movies coming out these days, or at the tendency to rationalize life with a far-flung theory or ‘alternate reality’. The deeper sense of this position is to use the mind’s doubting quality to question all ready-made beliefs, which can lead to a direct experience of the mystery. The mind likes to divert itself from this path, taking off into fantasy, going blank, filling itself with information, intoxicants, memories, or whatever. Behind all that one can still discern the longing to dissolve – and who knows which way that will take?
On August 27, the moon is full and will go through a total lunar eclipse, which is visible in much of the world. In central Europe, it begins at 21.30, just after moonrise. If you want to see it, make sure you have a clear view to the southeast. At 22.21 it will be total: the moon is completely covered by the shadow of the earth. It is still visible, however, with a dull red color, giving it the nickname of ‘Blood Moon’. At 23.13 the earth’s shadow has passed and we will see a full moon shining in the sky. Let us hope for good weather.
Why does the moon become red? It’s because of the Rayleigh scattering, which describes how the atmosphere around the earth lets the red colors of the spectrum pass easier than the blue ones. The blue range gets scattered, causing us to see the sky as blue. Without the blue, the sun looks yellow to us. Viewed from space, the sky is black, and the sun is white.
At sunrise and sunset, the light has to travel through more of the atmosphere, so more blue (and green) light is filtered out. We see orange and red skies. During a lunar eclipse, some sunlight bends around the earth as it stands in between sun and moon. That light travels through the earth’s atmosphere, which filters out the blue part. The remaining red wavelengths make the moon look red like blood.
From the new moon on July 13 until half August the planets create a favorable climate for a dry-run or test-drive of putting our ideals, the things we really want to implement in our life, into practice. There is energy to know what you want and to ‘put your foot into the water’ so to speak, without the need and support to fully commit yet. The eclipsed full moon is like an evaluation point in this process: how is the response of your environment and how do you feel yourself about it? If your inner clarity is reflected in the people around you, know that you can go ahead.
Here is an astrological viewpoint, equally valid and beautifully worded by Roya Backlund:
Whether you’re ready for it or not, an eclipse is the perfect time to finally make a decision you’ve been afraid to make, to add your final touches to a project that’s been driving you mad, to break off a relationship that lately has been feeling like dead weight, to gather up the courage to ask your crush out, to finally start writing that novel, to quit your dead-end job and follow your dreams. Eclipses are necessary times that book-end the period of life you’ve been living in. Basically, this story is over but a new one will begin tomorrow. No matter where you’re at in life, the eclipse will push you out of our comfort zone. This might result in success as much as it could in failure but one thing’s for sure: by the time it’s over, you will have grown.
