The Transits for 2020
Human Design and astrology both use the planetary positions to calculate your birth chart and give you clues about who you are. Although Human Design maps the celestial bodies in a different way, their movements of course are the same.
You may have heard astrologers talk about the conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in January, the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in December, and the various meetings of Pluto and Jupiter in between. Astrology has been around for millennia, a venerable esoteric science, whereas Human Design is relatively new on the scene. Still, these transits are significant in this contemporary system too. Let me take you on a tour and show you the qualities of 2020, through the lens of Human Design.
The Great Conjunction and other meetings
From 26 December 2019 until February 12, Pluto and Saturn sojourn in Gate 61, Inner Truth. They will be there again from June 26 till November 3. It is also in this Gate that the tree meetings of Jupiter and Pluto happen. Jupiter and Saturn, finally, stand in the same Gate – 60, Limitation – two times this year: from April 21 to June 6, and between Dec 3 and 28. This last one is the time of the Great Conjunction in astrology.
These slow-moving planets exert their influence primarily on the collective plane, on our society. We as individuals may perceive them as some kind of force that we cannot quite grasp. That can make us uneasy, so often we tend to find a culprit: someone must be doing something to us. Because these planets represent powerful currents in our unconscious, it takes a good deal of courage to face them directly. In doing that, we also need to come to terms with our collective conditioning. It is here that we find the great potential of this year, since the life energy that was bound up in the collective will become available for our own, individual connection with these universal forces. There is a kind of separation of ways: those who continue to identify with the collective may mainly experience discomfort, while those who have realized they need not think and feel like the mainstream have a great opportunity to enter a new space within themselves and take on a new role in the world.
Our deepest longings
On the one hand these slow-moving, outer planets are part of the solar system, on the other hand they are portals to what is ‘out there’, to spheres we normally prefer to leave untouched (while Jupiter is not an outer planet, it is exposed strongly to the qualities of Saturn and Pluto in 2020).
This year offers the opportunity, and perhaps the inevitability, to let our awareness expand into these realms, and find out what that means for us in our everyday lives. In other words, we will need to look deeply within ourselves for what is truly ours, what we are meant to do here, what is our real desire, our longing in this life – and then recreate our life from what we have discovered. The meetings of Saturn, Pluto, and Jupiter, and their placements in Gates 60 and 61, open a pathway how to do that.
It seems to me that we are part of a grand design, an intricate weaving through space and time of the energies that shape us, and to which we contribute as well, into form. After centuries, and maybe millennia, this design is entering a new phase. We see the old structures dissolve and this process will continue, along with desperate efforts to keep things going as they used to. In Hindu mythology, we find an equivalent of Pluto in Shiva as the destroyer. What impedes new beginnings has to go, in whatever way.
Out of our mind?
Gate 61 has to do with old structures in the mind, encrusted ways to color our reality. What Pluto really wants here is an open mind, not bound by past ideas but available to reflect the moment that happens now, as a mirror. Together with Saturn, the planet of structure, it means a dissolution of old structures, so that new ones can evolve. This will take place in our thinking process – which is scary because generally we believe that’s what we are – and also in the outer world, which can be quite unsettling too. What used to be secure – the value of money, pension plans, social contracts, as well as our values and ethical systems – is no longer so. We are left on our own before the mystery. The ancient Chinese name of Gate 61 is Inner Truth, it is a pressure gate from the Crown center in Human Design. On one side is the mystery, that which cannot be expressed; on the other side the mind, trying to find concepts, beliefs, explanations; some way to make sense of it all. Inner Truth dawns when we realize we cannot make sense of the mystery of being here, and let it touch our heart instead of trying to explain it away.
The practical side
Perhaps you wonder: this all sounds mighty mystical, but what use is it to me? There are some uses, I think.
One: it helps to understand those petty, aging patriarchs that seem to head many countries these days. They represent the side in us that will do anything to hold on to the old. It’s their role in the play.
Then: we can no longer run away from the question what we are doing here. What is my purpose, my role in this cosmic play? While the planets make it clear that our thoughts cannot provide the answer, they also offer an unparalleled opportunity to dive in deep and be receptive to what life itself whispers in our hearts. We have an easy access to our deep longings, the things that will really give sense to our life. You could say these transits prepare and plow the earth, so that we can plant the seeds of projects that will transform our own and other people’s lives in years to come.
Patience before expansion
Practically this calls for patience. Let go of expectations to ‘make it big’ this year, and be ready for some more inner work. The movement of the Moon Nodes indicate that from April through July is a good time to share and explore inner findings with others, while staying true to your individuality. Then, towards the end of the year the planetary climate changes, and it becomes easier to gather resources and spread your visions – and make money with it too.
Gradually, through the year, the planets’ meetings move from Gate 61 to the next Gate, 60 – with Limitation, Realism, and Justice as its keywords. Gate 61 is at the top of the Human Design Chart, concerned with our spirit. Gate 60 is at the very bottom, it’s all about manifestation. Once we have opened our spirit to the stream of life, we have a clear view how to bring things into being with little effort. When we have freed our minds from old thinking patterns, our eyes see new ways how to accomplish things. We slip through the cracks in existing structures to create new ones. To other people this may look like magic or luck, but it is not. Realism brings a kind of objectivity to the table, a knowing what will work in a given situation.
Jupiter and Saturn will be together in Gate 60 from April 21 to June 6, and from Dec 3 to Dec 28. Society at large will be under the influence of the Limitation aspect of Gate 60, meaning that the structures will be stretched this year, but they may just about hold together a little longer.
Pluto in Gate 61 this year may bring out some of the darker aspects of the collective mind: religious fanaticism and persecution, a propensity to attack people with different views than one’s own, wanting to be right at all costs, the justification of violence to maintain the status quo. Sounds familiar? Pluto has been in and out of Gate 61 since March 2018: now it will stay in this gate until March 2021 (and after that some more, with Uranus as partner).
This brings us to Uranus, which contributes to the picture in its own way. From May 15 to Nov 26 it stands in Gate 24, Returning, with the keywords Addiction, Invention, and Silence. Here a note: these keywords come from the Gene Keys, a new wisdom transmission that has sprouted from the I Ching and Human Design. Richard Rudd has brought it into the world, and one of his insights is that each hexagram – or Gene Key, as he calls it – can be accessed through a frequency range. So how we experience a hexagram (or gate, or Gene Key) depends on our inner state when we approach it. Here, Addiction is the shadow state, the frequency where humanity currently lives. The mind turns around in endless circles, creating the same thoughts and experiences over and over. When we learn to recognize that there are gaps between thinking cycles, we make space for Invention, the gift state. Something higher filters down, something new occurs. Finally, in Silence, all our concepts disappear, without us doing anything. This last stage, the Siddhic frequency, is a mystical part of the Gene Keys. We cannot make it happen, but it inspires the other frequencies. In fact, they are part of one range. We make the divisions for practical purposes, so that we can talk about them and engage with them. It’s a beautiful way to describe the path to one’s true self, I think, and also gives us the tools how to walk it.
In Human Design, Gates 24 and 61 constitute the Channel of the Thinker. Uranus here will bring totally new concepts to the theme of structure that Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are cultivating in Gate 61. If these concepts come to you, see if you can give them form and pass them on. They may arrive as words you hear, or symbols, or an intuitive sense of order. When you get repetitive rebellious thoughts, like ‘these old structures must be broken down, I know the solution’, you are probably in the shadow frequency.
Find your way and dare to live it
All these conjunctions and channels happen in in the individual circuitry. This year is about finding our own way in the world. Having found it and daring to live it, we can inspire and update the collective. This circuitry is acoustic in nature; it also can be moody. Music is a great resource this year. Listen to it, or even better, make some music. Sing, alone or together, or play an instrument. A heartfelt song can do more for your prosperity than a thousand affirmations.
Romance and the rising of the feminine
From the end of January, Neptune is in Gate 22 this year – that’s the planet of the divine feminine in the Gate of divine femininity (also called Grace). It’s the counterpoint of all the commotion in the other part of the sky. It is an invitation to listen to the feminine, and specifically to the women in our world. While the petty patriarchs exemplify the last gasp of old-style masculinity, the well-being of the world will be served by women in positions of power. And yes, for men it is possible to listen to women, and be receptive to the feminine part in themselves, and still be fully a man. In fact, more so. The romance happens when the North Moon Node stands in Gate 12, Standing Still, from Aug 6 to Oct 3. Why does this Gate want to stand still? Deep down because it wants to become so pure that it can touch the living flame of the Divine in Gate 22, with which it forms a Channel, allowing Grace to be expressed between people. This is the Channel of Romance, or Innovative Interaction. It can literally be a good time for (unconventional) romance, or to find an artistic outlet for the energy, or it can simply bring up noble, graceful impulses in our relating.
Till here then the overview of how the bigger planets influence society as a whole and each of us personally this year. How this exactly expresses for you individually depends on your Chart. If you want to find out more how this year’s transits affect your life and how you can best find your way in these challenging times, feel free to connect with me about booking an individual transit reading.
In my research for this article, I have come across some astrologers who promise you guaranteed success when you book their 2020 prediction program. It seems a bit irresponsible. This year certainly offers great opportunities – after you have done your homework, as far as I can see. If you have confronted and dissolved your limiting mental and emotional patterns in the last years, then this year’s transits may feel like an upwind, a support to continue in the flow. Your experience will tell you.
A great year to you!
